i scanned and uploaded the rest of the photos from my assignments... each set also includes the assignment descriptions.
scanning the images fucked with all the colours, enough for me to have had to go into photoshop and try to correct them... so they might not look exactly like they do in real life.

TWO THINGS

1. Alison Mosshart makes me weak in the knees, she is such a babe in so many ways. (Have you ever seen her perform live? It's amazing.. I almost died watching The Kills.)

2. Hedi Slimane not only is an amazing designer, but he also takes some super amazing photographs some of which also make my insides quiver.

Okay so on my occasional perusal of Hedi Slimane's diary for photographic inspiration I find THIS:

I ALMOST CANNOT HANDLE IT.

Seriously if I can be HALF the photographer Hedi Slimane is.... I don't know, I'd be amazing. Or even like HALF as cool as Alison...

German photographers always seem to approach their subject matter in such a different way than anyone else. Industrial-like, I suppose.

When I first saw these images, they instantly reminded me of Berndt and Hilla Becher's typography of German industrial architecture:

I guess I should mention that one year ago from today, I was on a train leaving to Montreal for the adventure of a lifetime.

At about this time, I was at the camp in Montreal, making friends and trying not to be lonely.

1 year! That seems so long ago, but I still remember that day, how I felt and all the amazingly awesome people I met.

Quebec city!

this weekend the group took a trip to Quebec city!
I saw the streets I walked in, the restaurants I ate at, and the bars we drank in, when I was ther last, and I honestly felt the most at home I've felt in... well 6 months.
It's the first familiaity I've experienced in half a year, and I was so incredibly sad that we were only there for 2 days.
We stayed at an auberge in the city, and Saturday night, a bunch of us went to Sacrilege before bumping into some really cool people in the street and being invited to their place to smoke, drink and get smoked up.
i propose that next time any of us need to go away, we go to Quebec. It's $20 per person, per night at the auberge.. plus $4 for sheets (if you dont have a sleeping bag) and it's a really nice hostel... it includes fire escapes to hang out on during summer nights. and its within walking distance of a lot of bars.
i took pictures with my holga, so if you're lucky, i might send you one in the mail.

2 more weeks of work.
3 more weeks of the program. (plus 4 days of final evaluation in montreal, minus all the brazilians and plus all the canadians...)
i'll be home soon... i hope.

Summer Rain

It's 5am.
I can't sleep, yet again.
I lie in bed only to feel the beginnings of a panic attack creeping up on me.
I'm shaky and nauseous.
It's too stuffy in the house.
I need to go for a walk, but it's still dark out.
I want to go outside and watch the sun rise.
I am listening to the shins.

M.I.A: no more music?

M.I.A is going to launch her own clothing line featuring leggings, bomber jackets and t-shirts, all featuring bright colours and bold print.

Hopefully her leggings will be better than Lindsay Lohan's - although you can't really argue with the functionality of pockets and knee pads....

Also M.I.A. related, MTV has reported that she's looking to get out of the music industry and focus more on art.

So no more fly high like paper, get high like planes? This is sad!

There's no date or name set on the launch of her clothing line yet, but i guess if she doesn't make sweet music any more, you can at least dress like her... [source]

In other non-related news.. I hit up Value Village this morning (finally!) and was able to pick up the cutest flannel shirt, and an awesome blazer - both courtesy of the little boys section. I'm wearing them as cropped with 3/4 sleeves, and my mom tried her best to persuade me not to buy them because they're obviously too small, but i think theyre cute!

I also picked up a pretty old school camera with flash! for 5.99, so I went for a bike ride this afternoon with my brothers to this really weird sketchy bike trail in Streetsville to test it out. I'm not sure how well the pictures will turn out, the light metre doesn't work so I had to rely on the rule of sunny 16 and i'm just no good at estimating how many stops to go down and up according to light and shade variance. (if you can explain this, please help me!)

I also brought my polaroid, and got a couple shots with that. I'm on the 2nd box of my first pack, that means i only have 18 shots left! I'm seriously thinking about buying like 10 boxes off ebay for Brazil...

Anyways, I'll post pictures of the blazer and shirt soonish, and I'll scan the photos I took with the new (to me) camera as soon as I have them developed. There's also a post coming with all the polaroids I've shot this week (I'm working on a series.. it's still sort of in the works.) So stay tuned!

outfit post

I was bored today so I put together some outfits, set my camera on self-timer, and went to work.
Don't e-judge me.
I am planning outfits to wear to various events coming up in a couple weeks, and I needed some opinions.
And yes, this is what I do with my hair when I am at home and know that I am not going to go anywhere.




YES I DID DO LEGGINGS AS PANTS.
But they were shiny, and that shirt's long enough isn't it?
Where I will most probably wear this to, I'm sure I won't be the only one doing it.

They're the poor man's version of the american apparel lamé leggings from h&m and they're kinda itchy and super long.



The purple tights!
These are my new favourite shorts, and I have actually been wearing a variation of this outfit over the last couple of days. Sometimes with black tights, no tights, and/or a different shirt.




I bought this a couple days ago, and was told that it looks frumpy.. so I attempted to make it look not so frumpy.
But I'm undecided as to which way looks best, and if all my attempts look hideous, I may return it.



With a belt, purple tights and closed eyes?


A belt and no tights?


No belt and light olive-ish green tights?
(or no belt and no tights, because it kinda just looks like my legs are supertanned a really weird colour)


Or no belt and dark green tights, and the price tag sticking out?


So, does this mean this is going to turn into another "What I Wore Today" blog?
Probably not, although it was kind of fun, it was also a big pain in the ass to make sure everything was focused, and having to change aperture/shutter speed settings everytime the light changed, and i don't own a point and shoot digital camera.
Plus, sometimes I wear the same thing for a week if I know that no one is going to know that I did repeats (gross, I know but whatever), so I don't think I'd have a lot of material to post.
Maybe I'll do one occasionally like this one where I ask for opinions.

Exactitudes

I don't know if you guys have heard about photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek's ongoing project "Exactitudes".
The basic premise is that they have been taking pictures of people all around the world since 1994, and focusing on people in particular "style tribes". They take shots of people in certain poses and in effect, erase their individuality, displaying all the pictures of a particular "tribe" in a 3 x 4 format.
It's really interesting, and brings up questions of individuality when you see it. Certain groups who pride themselves as being different and unique (i.e. scene kids, goths, punks) when photographed and displayed that way, turn out to be part of something where they are in fact exactly like everyone else.

It's also reminiscent of Berndt and Hilla Becher's typography of German industrial architecture, and August Sanders' work, in which he created a typological catalogue of more than six hundred photographs of the German people.

There was a section of french boys that I saw on there that I wanted to show you guys, but they wouldn't let me save the whole series, and I didn't think of doing a screen shot til now, and I am having a really hard time trying to find them again..

The guy in the top at the middle totally looks like Xavier from Justice.

So my question is, is this another spin on stereotyping?
Are all those boys in "The French Touch" actually French?
If they aren't, then is that okay?
Are we pigeon-holing people based on their style?

The photographs are on display now at Selfridges in London, and I believe they are looking for new 'tribes' to add to the book which comes out at the end of the exhibition.
