4real

so i'm currently watching 4real on mtv.
they're in Liberia with M.I.A.
the things they talk about are things that i deal with day to day in my classes. i am very aware of the human rights abuses and the war that has been happening in Liberia and other areas of Africa, like in Sudan.
But something about watching a child, no more than 7 years old talk about the war, how it's affected his life, how it has taken his sister and uncle, and how he was brave when "people were coming to kills us" and how he had nothing to eat and drink fro six days while on the run, is heartbreaking.
what's even more heartbreaking is listening to him talk about how he wishes he could tell the other children that are taking part in the war as child soldiers to stop, and how he wants peace, and how he wants to live in a "new liberia".
this is why i'm studying international development. to be aware.
this is why i almost wish i wasn't because i'm so unsure of what to do with this, i'm unsure of what difference i will be able to make.

WHUT

why the hell is livejournal bombarding me with ads for the international muslim matrimonial site?
does anybody else find it weird that this may actually exist?
isn't there some sort of irony in the fact that the ad features a woman in a hijab, while there is a button juxtaposed on the bottom left allowing you to "browse photos now!"?
isn't the whole point of the hijab to place less emphasis on physical beauty when courting?
i'm not pretending to be an expert, this is just what i've been told by friends who are muslim.
and i am not being racist.
but this is fucking weird.

are there any muslims out there who can give me their take?

ed banger

Justice - Stress (auto remix)
the new justice track from Ed Rec Vol III
it's actually pretty old news... (well a couple days at least)
but i doubt anyone who reads this has heard it yet, so here you go.

also the ed rec vol III is out May 26 if anyone cares.

i didn't even know that there was a vol I and II...

theres also a Busy P x Murs track thats floating around thats supposed to be a straight up anthem to LA hipsters with shout outs to the cobrasnake, steve aoki and others.
i'll post it if i'm able to find it.

edit:
found it. the youtube itself is pretty funny. wtf at the spinning smiley face.
okay i know murs is supposed to be a big deal in the hiphop world, or was back in the day when i was a huge hiphop head and was always being sent the hottest underground tracks, but the lyrics on this track are kind of ridic.

"i got a dick that's as big as texas"
"we hit up cinespace, bro got his camera all up in my face tomorrow morning i'n gonna be on cobrasnake"
"dj am, steve aoki, got the dance floor packed and its mostly girls girls"

lol cinespace, steve aoki, cobrasnake.

I can't hate on it too much. I love Busy P.

outfit post

I was bored today so I put together some outfits, set my camera on self-timer, and went to work.
Don't e-judge me.
I am planning outfits to wear to various events coming up in a couple weeks, and I needed some opinions.
And yes, this is what I do with my hair when I am at home and know that I am not going to go anywhere.

YES I DID DO LEGGINGS AS PANTS.
But they were shiny, and that shirt's long enough isn't it?
Where I will most probably wear this to, I'm sure I won't be the only one doing it.

I guess you can see the shine better here.
They're the poor man's version of the american apparel lamé leggings from h&m and they're kinda itchy and super long.

The purple tights!
These are my new favourite shorts, and I have actually been wearing a variation of this outfit over the last couple of days. Sometimes with black tights, no tights, and/or a different shirt.

I bought this a couple days ago, and was told that it looks frumpy.. so I attempted to make it look not so frumpy.
But I'm undecided as to which way looks best, and if all my attempts look hideous, I may return it.

With a belt, purple tights and closed eyes?

A belt and no tights?

No belt and light olive-ish green tights?
(or no belt and no tights, because it kinda just looks like my legs are supertanned a really weird colour)

Or no belt and dark green tights, and the price tag sticking out?

So, does this mean this is going to turn into another "What I Wore Today" blog?
Probably not, although it was kind of fun, it was also a big pain in the ass to make sure everything was focused, and having to change aperture/shutter speed settings everytime the light changed, and i don't own a point and shoot digital camera.
Plus, sometimes I wear the same thing for a week if I know that no one is going to know that I did repeats (gross, I know but whatever), so I don't think I'd have a lot of material to post.
Maybe I'll do one occasionally like this one where I ask for opinions.

WHAT THE FUCK

WHAT THE FUCK CORY KENNEDY, WHO ARE YOU AND WHY DO YOU GET TO MEET KANYE WEST

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Fuck exams.

One more exam left!
Tomorrow is the last exam of the third year of my university career.
It feels pretty good until I realize that I may have another 2ish years to complete my degree... and a month of summer school after this..
But before I kiss the month of May goodbye, I will have a week of partying to last me the month.
Is it just me, or does May always kick off will some pretty sick shows?

Anyways.
If you want to stalk me, here is my sched. and accompanying commentary.

April 30 - Yelle
I doubt this will be as good as when I went to see her in October.
a) I will be completely sober
b) It's at the fucking Opera House, instead of The Drake like last time
c) I have since found that copious amounts of ginos listen to her, and refer to her as "that french chick"
Also, GRANDMARNIER WE ARE COMING FOR YOU.

May 1 - Heartsrevolution
a.k.a. The Cobra Snake Dance Party
Where all my internet pop-culture dreams will come true!

May 5 - Robyn
She better play Show Me Love, I am serious.

I don't think this was the hitlist version of the video, I don't remember it as vividly as the BBMak ones...

May 6 - The Kills
M.E.X.I.C.O.C.U.
yeah?

Maybe I'll replace alcohol with Redbull?

Exactitudes

I don't know if you guys have heard about photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek's ongoing project "Exactitudes".
The basic premise is that they have been taking pictures of people all around the world since 1994, and focusing on people in particular "style tribes". They take shots of people in certain poses and in effect, erase their individuality, displaying all the pictures of a particular "tribe" in a 3 x 4 format.
It's really interesting, and brings up questions of individuality when you see it. Certain groups who pride themselves as being different and unique (i.e. scene kids, goths, punks) when photographed and displayed that way, turn out to be part of something where they are in fact exactly like everyone else.

It's also reminiscent of Berndt and Hilla Becher's typography of German industrial architecture, and August Sanders' work, in which he created a typological catalogue of more than six hundred photographs of the German people.

Hilla and Berndt Becher - Pitheads

Anyways, here are a couple of images from the Exactitudes exhibit I found on Style Bubble.

Cardi-clad, geek chic boys.
(Sasha, we should include this as an example image)

Scarf wearing, "emo", short haired girls.

You can see more of the work on http://www.exactitudes.com/ .
(Just click any of the images, and the particular "style tribe" of whoever you clicked on, will show up)
There was a section of french boys that I saw on there that I wanted to show you guys, but they wouldn't let me save the whole series, and I didn't think of doing a screen shot til now, and I am having a really hard time trying to find them again..

EDIT: I found them!

The guy in the top at the middle totally looks like Xavier from Justice.
Just sayin'

So my question is, is this another spin on stereotyping?
Are all those boys in "The French Touch" actually French?
If they aren't, then is that okay?
Are we pigeon-holing people based on their style?

The photographs are on display now at Selfridges in London, and I believe they are looking for new 'tribes' to add to the book which comes out at the end of the exhibition.
You can hear Ari Versluis talk more about this project here

BREAKING MUSIC NEWS.

The bassist from CSS has decided to leave the band!

Press release:
CSS announce today that bass player Ira Trevisan has left the group for personal reasons. CSS drummer Adriano will take over the bass duties, and live the band will work with a session drummer (a friend of the band) from now on. The band said "It will be feroche!"
Talking about her departure from the band Ira said "I decided to move forward and dedicate more of my time to fashion and other projects. Just a big change of priorities, as I will never stop playing music. I am also a bit worried about climate change. People should care more and do something about it. I decided to fly less. CSS will always be in my heart. They said goodbye to their bass player, but they won a new life time fan. In health and sickness, in happiness and so forth. Blah blah blah, so help us God."
CSS' second album will be released in the UK in July. They are back in the UK in May for a string of UK dates on the MTV Spanking New Music tour. More news on both the album and upcoming live dates to be announced soon.

Sooooo does this mean they won't be able to recreate another "Let's make love and listen to Death From Above"? This is kind of sad.

Radio Head

So we all know how progressive Radiohead is.
Now they have a remix competition.
The task is to remix Nude. (As in make a remix of the Radiohead song entitled "Nude", not remix in the Nude, thanks.)
Listen to all the remixes here.
OR
Listen to the best out of the bunch, and currently in 3rd place HERE.
And vote for it while you're at it, because it would actually be pretty amazing to have Thom Yorke listen to it.

JUSTICE X SURFACE TO AIR COLLECTION

A couple of hours ago, I microwaved a Mrs. Fields cookie (white chocolate macadamia nut) to warm it up and get it gooey and yummy, but I put it in for too long, and it burned. It was only a surface burn in the middle, so I brought it upstairs and ate it anyways, and my room STILL smells like burnt food. IDGI.

Anyways music x fashion update.
Justice has collaborated with Surface to Air to bring you their love of leather goods, and awesome denim. (Surface to Air directed the "We are your friends" video..)
For the collection, Justice has designed a limited edition series of 3 jackets (150 pieces), and 2 pairs of jeans. The collection will be available at select locations worldwide including Surface To Air Paris, Surface To Air Brazil, Colette, Barneys, Lane Crawford, Isetan, Le Bon Marché, Paris Texas, Asylum, Le Shop, Incu. (Not to be found in Toronto or the surrounding area though sadly!)

Video Gamezz

In this completely unexpected piece of fashion news.. Karl Lagerfeld is going to make a cameo in Grand Theft Auto IV.
Sorry kids, you're not going to be able to make him beat the crap out of homeless people and prostitutes, though.
He cameos as a DJ on the game's K109 The Studio Station.
So you can cruise through Liberty City listening to some of Karl's favourite electronica and dance music (woohoo Glass Candy!) to which he adds his rapid-fire commentary.

Rebecca Turbow

Admittedly I was not a fan of Rebecca Turbow's designs when first introduced to her.
(She is Sasha's favourite designer).
There may have been one or two pieces that I liked from what I saw, but nothing memorable.
However, Sasha happened to show me this video of the designer's Spring/Summer 08 collection "Safe", and I am actually liking what I see.
(This might actually have something to do with the fact that it's set to HEARTSREVOLUTION's CYOA... which may have actually made Sasha die a little)
I really liked the jacket, and the reversible dress.
The second dress that the model wore with the white knee socks was also quite cute, as well...
The white coat with the green lining, the green coat (was it the white coat reversed??) and the last coat were pretty amazing..
Actually, I liked quite a bit of it, but it's really hard to keep watching and pausing the video to describe the outfits, because it's getting kind of hard to keep track of..
The only thing I did not like was the green bubble dress, and the white one after it.
Anyways, here's the video. Sasha linked it to me, and she also has it posted in her secret blog that no one knows about and no one can read, because she posts under an alias. So I'm showing it in a more public forum (kinda).

new to the internet

What the hell, style.com.
Why is your website so hard for me to navigate?
Yes, I'm new to this whole "fashion blogging" thing.
But I already know that style.com is where it's AT to get current information about fashion and the such. (i.e. the previous post about H&M and Comme des Garcons)
So what the hell, why is it that everytime I go on there to see if there's anything new and pertinent to update my readship (all 2 of you) about, I cannot seem to find my way around, and give up after about 2 minutes of clicking around?
Maybe I'm an idiot.
Whatever.
