mens wear #1: If I was a boy.

Recently someone asked me to do a post on mens wear?
Why they'd ask me, I don't know. I haven't even done a post on women's wear yet.
I had no idea where to start, but I've always said that boys have it pretty easy.
Plus we all know that I am stuck on a particular type of aesthetic.
Anyways, I started searching for pictures and examples and decided to split it up into 2 parts.
So here's part one.
If I was a boy this is what I would wear:

Finally, a reason to use polyvore!
What a good use of 3 hours of lecture time.

To me all you need to do is to throw on a v-neck and some skinny jeans, as pair of nike dunks or plimsoles and you're good. Want to class it up? Throw a vest over your v-neck and trade in the shoes for a pair of brogues and a fedora. Accessorize with a necklace and a messenger bag/man purse and you're gold.
The addition of a straw fedora helps these outfits transition into the summer. Pops of bright colours in shoes and accessories are also good.
The outfit in the middle could probably be teamed with a pair of single pleat shorts (technical term for this?), cuffed and ending just at the knee and a pair of boat shoes. I'm thinking either staying with black or a light khaki colour if you ditch the cardigan.

I think I would dress better as a male.
But this is a whole other story...

Part 2 with some real life examples coming next.

(then it's less fashion and more art/culture/music I promise.)

Dear diary #1

Dear Diary,
I went to bed last night completely stressed out and upset.
This morning I woke up angry.
I don't know if I can do this.
Where is my support?

Today on the subway I had an encounter with a cute boy.
An encounter that creepily lasted my entire journey from Bathurst to York, it involved the entirely movie-esque seeing cute boy get in elevator but it being too full for me to get on, seeing him sink out of sight and just thinking nothing of it.
Through some weird coincidence I walk by him at St. George and end up on the same subway car as him, climb up the stairs next to him, stand behind him in line for the bus to York, sit a seat away from him on the bus, walk next to him to the Student Centre, and despite my effort to get away from him (because it was making me feel really odd) and take a completely different route to buy food, he ends up at Wendy's which is right next to Jimmy the Greek where I was ordering salad and I bump into him eating his sandwich on my way to class.
We should be BFF by now.
This wasn't like a 15 minute thing. It was like over the course of an hour and a half

Diary, today is really fucking weird.
Should I craigslist him?
I am sitting in class and it smells like stank ass feet.

Stay classy, mc.

seasonal inadequacies

As the weather gets warmer (even if it's for a day), I feel myself yearning to pull out the shorts and the tanks, and showing as much skin as is possible all the while staying classy.
And as I shed the layers, only wearing one or two at a time, my body is revealed for what it is and not what it might look like under piles of clothing.
Maybe I'm just not used to looking at myself so um 'exposed', but I'm definitely feeling the pressure to lose my winter body and work myself into the summer.
I hate looking back at pictures taken during summer vacation and seeing that I look like a blimp.
(Why do you think no one has seen pictures of me from my trip to london/italy/spain 2 years ago?)
I feel gross, and I'm sure it comes across.. time to start eating better and get more sleep.
No more sojourns at Tim Hortons till 5am. No more juice, no more iced tea. No more eating my way through a 3 hour lecture.

outfit post #2

So as promised, here are some pictures of what I wore to class on Tuesday to fail my first multiple choice exam of my university career. You guys weren't kidding when you all bitched about how stupid/hard those exams are. I apologize for laughing it off.
Anyways, these are featuring the plaid shirt that I bought form Value Village, and perhaps in retrospect I shouldn't have worn it with highwaisted pants and cuffed them because I feel that it made me seem shorter/stockier than I really am.
apparently i make weird faces to amuse myself while waiting for the self-timer to go off.
and i also don't know exactly how long 12 seconds is, but it gives a nice backview and of the bag that you all know and have seen
details.

Also, while I was at Value Village, in addition to picking up some sweet swag, I also managed to find a cute boy.
Perfectly worn in Cheap Mondays, scuffed Nike High-tops, white crewneck, and swoopy hair.
Thrifting is good for all kinds of things.
I left him at the fitting rooms trying on dockers shorts and the most amazing pair of brogues that I'm jealous I wasn't able to fit in.
I also left without exchanging anything but a series of shy smiles and glances.
I am horrible at boys.
:(

M.I.A: no more music?

M.I.A is going to launch her own clothing line featuring leggings, bomber jackets and t-shirts, all featuring bright colours and bold print.
Not sure what to expect?
Just google image search her.

Collage [source]

Hopefully her leggings will be better than Lindsay Lohan's - although you can't really argue with the functionality of pockets and knee pads....

Also M.I.A. related, MTV has reported that she's looking to get out of the music industry and focus more on art.

So no more fly high like paper, get high like planes? This is sad!

There's no date or name set on the launch of her clothing line yet, but i guess if she doesn't make sweet music any more, you can at least dress like her... [source]

In other non-related news.. I hit up Value Village this morning (finally!) and was able to pick up the cutest flannel shirt, and an awesome blazer - both courtesy of the little boys section. I'm wearing them as cropped with 3/4 sleeves, and my mom tried her best to persuade me not to buy them because they're obviously too small, but i think theyre cute!

I also picked up a pretty old school camera with flash! for 5.99, so I went for a bike ride this afternoon with my brothers to this really weird sketchy bike trail in Streetsville to test it out. I'm not sure how well the pictures will turn out, the light metre doesn't work so I had to rely on the rule of sunny 16 and i'm just no good at estimating how many stops to go down and up according to light and shade variance. (if you can explain this, please help me!)

I also brought my polaroid, and got a couple shots with that. I'm on the 2nd box of my first pack, that means i only have 18 shots left! I'm seriously thinking about buying like 10 boxes off ebay for Brazil...

Anyways, I'll post pictures of the blazer and shirt soonish, and I'll scan the photos I took with the new (to me) camera as soon as I have them developed. There's also a post coming with all the polaroids I've shot this week (I'm working on a series.. it's still sort of in the works.) So stay tuned!

models/singers

So I'm sure everybody's heard and seen the trainwreck that was Scarlett Johansson's singing-career, and everybody is aware of the actress/singer phenomenon.
But what about the model/singer?
Can models sing? It's always weird to see/hear and model speak, let alone sing. I mean, I like to look at them, and their outfits and stuff, but to realize they're actually people and can talk and do stuff other than smile and pose is weird sometimes.
On that note (haha ?) here's a video from Five O'Clock Heroes, featuring none other than Miss Agyness Deyn.
And it's actually not that bad, in my opinion. I know she has a pretty hardcore accent, but it doesn't come out too much in the singing..
Anyways, here you go:

Apparently she's not the only one to move in with the model/singer trend.
We've got Irina Lazareanu's foray into the musical sphere, and Daisy Lowe waiting on a collaboration with Mark Ronson.

AND Kate Moss is apparently dying to get in on the action with Jamie and Allison.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=563795&in_page_id=1773&ito=1490
All I can say is that, I really hope they don't let her on stage with them. Kate Moss is Kate Moss and all, but as I've blogged before, The Kills are pretty much perfect as is.
Maybe she IS jealous of VV and Hotel's dynamic.
